Buying Alligator Shears – What Recycling Facilities Should Look For

Anyone looking to buy an alligator shear is quickly faced with a number of technical questions that product listings alone cannot answer. Cutting performance, drive type, material throughput, ease of maintenance—and then there’s the question: new or used? This article provides a practical overview of the most important factors to consider.

What an alligator clip must be able to do

Alligator shears are used in the scrap metal trade and in metal recycling to cut steel beams, structural steel, pipes, cable bundles, and scrap metal into manageable pieces.

The cutting width and height determine which profiles fit into the machine. The cutting force, measured in tons, determines how hard the material can be. Grade S355 is standard.

Hydraulic or mechanical?

Most commercial alligator shears are hydraulic: they provide consistent cutting force, cause less wear, and are easier to adjust. Mechanical shears are less expensive, but are only suitable for more homogeneous material flows.

Buy used alligator shears

Pay attention to the following points: blade condition, hydraulics (seals, hoses, cylinders), operating hours, and spare parts availability. Technically inspected used machines offer a service life that is hardly inferior to that of a new machine.

Stationary or mobile?

Stationary solutions are more powerful. Mobile alligator shears are a good option for changing locations, but they have limitations in terms of cutting capacity and throughput.

How much do alligator pliers cost?

A price quote without specifications is not credible. The key factor is the balance between acquisition costs, maintenance expenses, and throughput.

Our product range includes new and used alligator shears in various performance classes—all technically inspected, with delivery and installation included. You can find an overview of scrap balers and metal balers in our product range. Contact us —we’re happy to advise you with no pressure to buy.
